José D. Fernández was a Cuban American that played professionally for the Miami Marlins baseball team as a pitcher since 2013. Fernández came from Cuba when he just 15 and became one of baseballs brightest stars. This a star that will shine bright no more after the reported death of José D. Fernández Sunday morning.
Florida Boating Accident
A Florida boating accident claimed the lives of José D. Fernández and two of his friends. The boat was discovered upside down setting against some rocks by Coast Guard personnel on patrol at 3:15 am Sunday morning. Two bodies were discovered by divers and a third body was found on the rocks. It is said that the boat hit the rocks going full speed based on impact evidence of between 50mph to 65 mph.
Fans took to facebook to give their condolences. “He was pillar to our community. He was involved in everything that he could be to give back,” Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Veloz said. “I had the experience of talking to him several times — down-to-earth, great person … I’m sorry I’m getting goosebumps right now. It’s really hitting home and it’s horrible.”
Former MLB pitcher Dan Haren tweeted: “Jose Fernandez is one of the most genuine guys I’ve ever played with. He loved life, he loved baseball… he will be missed dearly.”
Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred issued a statement saying, “He was one of our game’s great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013.”
