- Use the sidewalks. Halloween can be a pretty chaotic time. Even though the streets are filled with walking pedestrians, cars are still on the road. With all of the crazy costumes out these days, it is easy for a motorist to become distracted and an accident to occur. With fewer pedestrians in the middle of the roadway and on the sidewalks, it is less likely for an accident to occur.
- Trick or Treat with an adult. Though we would all like to think that the world is a safe place to be in, the truth of the matter is, it is not. There are weird people in this world that prey off of the weak and in this case, it would be children. It is also safest to go trick or treating with adult supervision. You can never take a chance with your children.
- Check who is at your door. Even though you will get used to the sound of your doorbell when you have volunteered to hand out candy this year, you should always check who is at your door before you open it. If you are suspicious of people at your door, especially older teenagers, adults without children and those without costumes or just masks, don’t open your door. Keep porch lights on and make sure you have a clear view of who is outside. If you don’t want to entertain trick-or-treaters, post a note covering your doorbell.
- Check Halloween candy before you eat it. I can not stress enough how important it is to inspect your children’s candy before you allow them to eat it.
- Stay seen. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
