Ebola Protocols Coming To Miami International Airport (MIA)

temperature scanner at MIA airport pictureEbola is far from South Florida, but it’s now taking precautions to be ready by the county commission. On Wednesday, meetings were taken place at Miami International Airport (MIA) along with Miami-Dade County’s Emergency Operations Center to tune up the protocols for Ebola.

There are no direct flights to Miami from West Africa, but there were some major questions.  CDC and Customs targeted on handling  of travels with airport officials at the closed door meeting in Miami International Airport (MIA).

Which protocols need to be updated not for Ebola but other infectious diseases? How will they handle the connecting passengers?  How will they know which agency identifies who needs to be screened?

Customs are looking at everything; the protocols for passengers arriving domestic and internationally. They even have a protocol for if a passenger steps off a flight ill and starts vomiting blood.  Passengers coming from West Africa with connecting flights anywhere will have their temperatures checked.

If these passengers have any of the symptoms related to the new criteria they could be entered into the CDC quarantine area. Included in these new criteria would be; what countries they visited, if they are on a watch list for a specific malady, and physical symptoms relating anything to this new rising epidemic.

Health inspectors of the CDC have upgraded their surveillance with the arriving international flights from the Americas to the Caribbean, where severe strains of the flu, dengue fever and cholera have been a problem. The CDC said it has staff in the two different federal inspection stations at Miami International Airport MIA which can address these issues.

The Obama administration has wrestled in recent weeks with what it can do, since arriving passengers may not be symptomatic when they arrive.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott agrees with the decision by the White House to start screening, and further stated restrictions are necessary.
