Mileage Tax for Connecticut?

Many people fConnecticut Milage Taxeel as though they are taxed out of the ying yang these days by the government. It just seems that the government is finding every way possible to make an extra buck. Well Connecticut drivers, meet the new coming mileage tax that could be coming to a town near you!

New Connecticut Tax

Connecticut is one out  of five states that is partnering with the federal government on a pilot study of mileage taxes.  Connecticut has gone above and beyond in agreement to match a federal grant to study the implementation of the mileage tax and is spending $300,000. State Senator Toni Boucher, R-Wilton, is a ranking member of the Legislature’s Transportation

Committee and had her own option on the subject of the matter. She says she’s surprised Connecticut is committing to spend money to study a millage tax when there’s little public support for such a tax.

And The Citizens Say…….

“People feel they’ve been taxed enough, that this would be an additional burden to them. They keep raiding the transportation funds, already, to close budget gaps. Who has any trust that this would be used in the way that it’s intended?” Boucher says this will also violate many citizens privacy. This new tax would require the state to have a monitoring system to be installed on private vehicles.

Those that defend this tax idea use the GPS for a debate saying, “GPS allow no privacy and many people take advantage of those applications.” This is true however, citizens have a choice to use that or not and can also turn them off when they are not needed.

State officials are considering a mileage fee because the state’s gas tax is no longer generating enough money to cover the cost of road repairs.
