The tension between police and the public is a growing sore in America today. Problems and issues across the nation have embedded a sense for the need of self security.
Gaining Trust in the community……
In a strong attempt to gain the communities trust back, Connecticut has implemented a new state program that will have Connecticut police wear body cameras. The goal for this new program is to improve the communities trust in the police force and to improve police accountability. Only a few Connecticut police departments are showing interest in the program and it has been reported that only 10 of the over 100 law enforcement agencies have contacted the State Office of Policy and Management about receiving reimbursement for the body camera costs. This program has been funded $15 million to equip agencies with the needed equipment.
Pros and Cons of the body camera program
Does this program seem like a solution to the public’s concerns regarding police brutality? Would this in fact end all racial and governmental wars regarding recent police related deaths? Though it is strongly doubted that this program will cease all violent activity between police and the public, it is nice to know that they are making an effort to find a resolution to the situation. Even though an effort towards peace has been made, there are some concerns that come to light. Several Connecticut police departments are concerned about the high cost of storing video and other issues, but are mainly concerned about the low rate to inherit rate of such a program raising a question of their commitment to unity.
“This is very disappointing news,” said Scot X. Esdaile, president of the Connecticut State Conference of NAACP Branches. “It shows there’s no real strong will on law enforcement’s part. I think police officers really don’t want this to work.”
